Permanent hair loss

The chemicals used for relaxing treatments and hair coloring can be dangerous if used improperly. They can cause scalp burns and permanent hair loss. One Fort Worth woman, Robin Gunby, settled a case with the Regis Hair Salons for $180,000 after she suffered from permanent hair loss and was left partially bald after a relaxer treatment.

Gunby, 57, began experiencing tingling and burning on her scalp following a treatment in February 2018. She developed serious skin irritation soon after the treatment and had to go to the emergency room for treatment. They prescribed antibiotics and a topical cream, neither of which improved the condition.

A few days after her ER visit, Gunby experienced burning around her forehead, ears, and scalp. She began showing skin lesions and blisters. This ended up being due to second-degree burns. In March of 2018, she was diagnosed by her dermatologist with permanent hair loss and hyperpigmentation along her entire hairline.

Gunby was represented by Randall Knutson of Knutson & Casey Law Firm.

Coloring chemical burn a woman through her clothing

Karen Woelfel went to the SmartStyle Hair Salon in Minnesota in March of 2017 to get her hair colored. Shortly after receiving the coloring services, she says she noticed that the coloring chemicals had dripped off her hair and burned through her clothing. She says she tried to shower the chemicals off for more than 20 minutes but still suffered several burns on her back and arm. These burns caused permanent injury and scarring.

In a lawsuit filed against Regis Corporation, the salon owners, Woelfel was cited for negligence in failing to properly train and supervise the employee who performed the coloring services. Woelfel alleges that the stylist told her to go home and wash off the chemicals and that she did not have enough time to do it at the salon.

Regis Corporation was previously sued by another woman whose scalp was burned when coloring was applied to her hair.

The plaintiffs in this case were also represented by Randall Knutson of Knutson & Casey Law Firm.

Salon injuries are not uncommon

Salon owners and employees have a responsibility to ensure their patrons have a safe and sanitary environment. They are strictly regulated and licensed by state officials. However, when a salon worker is negligent or careless, it is not uncommon for the following injuries to occur:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Staph infection
  • Laser burns
  • Bacterial infections
  • Slip and fall injuries
  • Cuts and abrasions
  • Chemical burns
  • Wax burns
  • Hair loss and scalp injuries

Even minor scrapes, burns, and punctures can become major infections if the staff members have not properly disinfected the equipment.

There are various types of damages that a victim of beauty salon negligence can recover. This can include:

  • Coverage of the victim’s medical bills
  • Recovery of lost wages if they cannot work
  • Pain and suffering damages
  • Mental anguish damages
  • Loss of enjoyment of life damages
